Preparation
- Wash and dry your hands properly.
- If you are not using a changing table, consider laying a blanket or towel on the floor or bed.
- Prepare supplies including a clean diaper, wipes, and paper towels.
Note: If you lay the baby on an elevated surface, make sure you always keep one hand at the baby. This is to ensure that the baby does not roll off.
Diapers Changing Guide For Dads Steps
- Open a new clean diaper and place it under the baby. Make sure that the back half of the diaper (the one with the tabs) is in the right position. If the old diaper is gonna be a big mess, you might want to place a towel or cloth first in order to keep the new diaper clean to use.
- Unfasten the tabs of the old dirty diaper. To prevent the tabs from sticking to the baby, fold them over.
- Remove the dirty diaper by pulling down the front half of it first. Then fold in half under your baby (clean side up). At that, you need to lift the baby’s bottom gently. Leave the old folded diaper under the baby’s bottom.
- Clean the baby’s front with a towel, wipe, or cloth. Make sure to always wipe from the front to the back (towards his/ her bottom). This is to prevent infection.
- If the baby pooped, grab another wipe and clean the bottom. At that make sure to clean and hold your baby gently.
- Let the baby’s skin air dry for a few moments or dry it gently with a clean cloth. This is to prevent diaper rash.
- Remove the old dirty diaper and find the new one laying underneath your baby (see step 1).
- Pull up the front half of the diaper toward your baby’s tummy. For a boy, make sure to point the private down. For newborns, avoid covering the umbilical cord stump, until it has fallen off.
- Make sure the part of the diaper between the baby’s legs is spread and fitting close but comfortable.
- Fasten the diaper with the tabs on both sides. Make sure the diaper fits tight but not pinching. Make sure the tabs are not sticking to the baby’s skin.
