From April 13 to 15 it is the time of the year that most Thai people are looking forward to. It is the time when most Thais in Bangkok go back to their family living in the provinces to celebrate the Thai new year.
Songkran is all about making merit and paying respect to elders. People use water to wash away bad karma. This ensures Thai that the year to come will be a good and fruitful year.
It is also a period in which Thai people prepare to welcome the rainy season and eventually the harvest season after a long summer.
In the Big Cities
People often go to temples to make merit, set free birds and fishes, or meditate. They often take time out of their busy schedule to spend with their family and appreciate the older generations in particular.
The younger population usually enjoy their days on the streets of the cities throwing and spraying water from a bucket or water gun at each other. It is the most festive time of the year for Thai families and is eagerly looked towards by kids and young adults.
On Saturday, April 15, it is Thai New Years Day. It is the final day of Songkran celebrations in many parts of the country. On this day offerings are left at the temples to ring in the new year.
